QZ tray

Introduction #

Silicon ioi is a fully cloud-based solution. Thanks to web technologies, it can be used anywhere, anytime, and does not rely on any specific hardware.

However, some features require a direct connection to hardware, notably for printing directly from the application.

By default, printing in Silicon ioi generates a downloadable PDF file, which the user can then manually print using the “Print” button in the PDF viewer.

But if you wish to print automatically in the background, it becomes necessary to turn the client workstation into a local print server.

To achieve this, Silicon ioi is fully compatible with QZ Tray, an open-source tool (freely available, with an optional paid support plan if needed). It creates a secure bridge between the browser and local printers.

Topology #

To enable automatic printing, simply install QZ Tray on the client workstation (Windows or macOS).\nThis establishes a gateway between Silicon ioi and local printers, making direct printing possible without manual intervention.

Security Certificate #

QZ Tray uses a secure connection to communicate with Silicon ioi.\nA digital certificate is required to authorize and secure exchanges between both systems.

Creating the Certificate #

• The certificate is generated from the user module (ioi User).
• You must enable the Use QZ Tray option for the relevant user.
• Then simply click on Generate Certificate.

• Once the certificate is generated, download it and add it to QZ Tray on the workstation(s).

Multi-User Case #

• It is possible to add multiple certificates on the same workstation if several users share the device.
• If a user accesses multiple environments (production, test, demo…), one certificate per environment must be generated and added to QZ Tray.

Print Configuration #

Step 1: Selecting the Local Printer #

Once QZ Tray is installed, the printers available on the workstation are listed in the interface.\n*Example*: we want to use the LP07-Color printer.

Step 2: Creating the Printer Model (ioi Printer Model) #

Each printer must be linked to a printer model, which defines:

• Print mode: color or black & white
• Duplex (double-sided) printing
• Orientation (portrait or landscape)
• And most importantly: the printing technology = QZ Tray

Step 3: Configuring the Printer (ioi Printer) #

Next, one or more printers must be created in Silicon ioi:

• Enter the printer ID
• Select the local printer from the list (detected via QZ Tray)
• Link a previously defined printer model

It is possible to test the printing directly from the interface:\nA test document will then be sent to the printer.

Report Configuration #

In the report configuration, to use direct printing:

• Set the destination to “Direct Print”
• Specify a default printer
• Enable “Show Printer Settings Dialog” if you want the user to choose the printer and its settings at each print
• Use “User Printer Settings” to define printer preferences per user
